Start with the aggregate
Decomposed granite varies by gradation, fines content, source and moisture. Confirm aggregate compatibility and build a small test section before committing to a production application.
Water and drainage
Slope, drainage and a stable base matter independently of the binder. A polymer treatment is not a substitute for proper subgrade preparation.
Consider the installation window
Trail Binder requires drying to polymerize. Follow manufacturer installation requirements, including the rain-free period, daytime and nighttime temperatures and storage limits.
Estimating
Enter each path's length, width and intended depth in the Trail Binder calculator. Its estimates are based on a defined 3-inch baseline and include perimeter treatment. Confirm final consumption before ordering.
DG gradation and binder penetration
Screened decomposed granite can contain very different proportions of coarse granite particles, sand-sized grains and fines. The degree of interlock after compaction and the ability of a liquid treatment to reach the target depth depend on those proportions. Request the actual quarry grading and test that material rather than relying on a generic DG label.
Edges and connections
Transitions from DG to concrete, timber edging, storm drains and planted beds concentrate wear. Specify flush transitions where needed and identify where runoff crosses these interfaces. A mockup should include an edge and a transition, not just an uninterrupted patch of flat pathway.
Site acceptance example
Inspect the compacted wearing course before treatment, record moisture conditions on the treatment day, and document how the finished surface responds to normal foot traffic after the prescribed cure period. Acceptance should be related to the project drawings and standards, not to a blanket product claim.
Choosing the finished DG mix
For a walkway intended to look like natural decomposed granite, the quarry selection determines its color, grain texture and how the material compacted under equipment. Compare screened grades and check the fine fraction because an excess of powder can behave like dust or slurry while a coarse, open texture may not form a cohesive wearing layer. Document the exact supply source in the construction notes so a later delivery cannot silently change the material.
Mockup inspection sequence
Place the actual aggregate over the designed base, compact it with the intended equipment and photograph its appearance before treatment. After following the official binder directions and curing schedule, inspect color, continuity and edge restraint. Revisit the sample after normal use and a wet-weather event if schedule permits. Record whether the aggregate needs regrading or the water management details need alteration before the full path is installed.
