On-Site Installation Sequence

A practical field guide for preparing, applying, and finishing TrailBinder.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Installation steps

  1. Tool PrepConfirm what you need. Walk the path before unloading. Check that you have measuring buckets, mixing containers, a stirrer, sprayer or watering can, rake, compactor or roller, masking materials, broom, rinse water, and protective gear.
  2. Get a plastic sheet if rain is forecast. Have a sheet large enough to cover the treated area, plus weights to hold it down without touching the wet surface.
  3. Material PrepGet TrailBinder. Bring the amount of concentrate needed for the path and keep it near the mixing area.
  4. Get clean water. Bring enough for a mix of 1 part concentrate to 5 parts water, plus separate clean water for rinsing equipment.
  5. Get mixing containers. For small batches, use a clean 5-gallon bucket and a graduated jug. For larger batches, use a clean 10–20-gallon mixing tub or several buckets; only mix what you can apply before it sits.
  6. Site PrepPlace and grade the gravel. Spread the selected aggregate to the specified depth. Rake it to the intended grade and check drainage before applying binder.
  7. Mask off adjacent areas. Lay plastic, tape, or boards against concrete, edging, paving, and other surfaces you do not want coated.
  8. Cover sprinkler heads. Locate each sprinkler head along the path. Cover it before spraying, and keep its opening clear.
  9. Spray PrepPlace the container on stable ground. Set the container flat on firm ground so it cannot tip while you pour and stir.
  10. Fill the mixing container with water. Set the empty container where you will mix. Measure the required clean water and pour it in first.
  11. Pour in the concentrate. Measure 1 part TrailBinder concentrate for every 5 parts water. Pour it into the water slowly.
  12. Mix thoroughly. Hold the container steady and stir from the bottom and around the sides until the liquid looks uniform.
  13. Pour into the applicator. Place the sprayer or watering can on level ground. Open the fill cap, transfer the mix carefully, and close the cap before moving.
  14. InstallationSpray onto the path. Start at the far end of the area. For smaller installations, work in approximately 4-foot by 4-foot patches, applying evenly without leaving untreated strips or pooling liquid.
  15. Rake into the aggregate. Use the rake to work the liquid through the treated surface, pulling and pushing the aggregate until the application is distributed evenly.
  16. Compact. Rake the treated surface level. Run the compactor or roller over the path to finish it, working systematically from one end to the other.
  17. Edge coat — 18 inches inward. Walk the perimeter with the applicator and make an additional pass along the edge band, extending approximately 18 inches toward the center.
  18. Finishing & CleanupScrub spills. Scrub additional splashes promptly with clean water and a broom or sponge.
  19. Rinse applicators as necessary. Use a brush or sponge and clean water to clean the sprayer, nozzle, watering can, and mixing tools before binder dries; rinse as necessary between batches.
  20. Remove the masking. Take away tape, plastic, and boards from adjacent surfaces once cleanup is complete.
  21. Cover the path if rain is expected. Place the protective sheet over the path if rain threatens during drying; secure it so it does not drag across the fresh surface. Keep traffic off until dry.
  22. Uncover the sprinklers after the path has fully cured. Leave sprinkler heads covered and irrigation off during curing. Once the path has cured, typically several days later, remove the covers and restore irrigation.
