Measure the slope
Record longitudinal grade, cross slope and where the route changes direction. Steeper routes can generate faster runoff and higher shear stresses in the surface aggregate. A simple binder treatment is not necessarily appropriate for every grade, particularly where concentrated water travels down the route.
Control water before treating aggregate
Drainage structures, grade breaks, swales and correctly directed cross slope may be needed to move water away without concentrating it at an unprotected edge. Inspect existing rills or displaced stone after storms. These symptoms should guide civil or landscape design corrections before binder selection.
Match aggregate to expected traction
Evaluate aggregate gradation, compaction and wet-surface traction as a finished system. Fine materials may behave differently on inclines than coarse angular stone. Where accessibility or public-use requirements apply, have the designer establish enforceable slope and surface criteria.
Evaluate stabilization on a mockup
Build a sloped trial section under representative site conditions. Observe application consistency, surface finish, drying and initial runoff behavior. Consult PolyFirm about aggregate and grade suitability rather than extrapolating performance from a level sample.
Construction, curing and maintenance
Plan work from suitable access points, manage equipment positioning and keep users away from fresh material. Respect manufacturer weather and curing requirements. Inspect high-flow locations and path edges after rainfall and address any recurring water concentration instead of repeatedly adding binder.
Assess downhill runoff energy
Even a well-compacted path may erode when drainage concentrates along its fall line. Map grades, inflow locations and where water leaves the trail. Surface stabilization should follow a drainage design and a representative sloped trial, not substitute for grade breaks, cross-drains or protected outlets.
Field review before final selection
For stabilizing sloped gravel paths, evaluate the proposed aggregate and surrounding site conditions against the actual project goals. Maintain an inspection record of material source, finished grade, surface condition, curing weather and any failed mockup locations. Treat supplier coverage calculations as planning figures until verified by a project-specific test, and confirm procurement details before scheduling the work.
